Phresman the 12 Graphs of Physics

Describe each motion. Think about the starting conditions and ending conditions for each motion
i.e. position & Velocity---> mathematically

Graph the following

On the first day of physics....
Graph an elf sitting in a tree

2nd Day of Physics
Graph an Elf ice skating

3rd Day of Physics
An elf skating backwards (Forward is the positive Direction)

4th Day of physics...
An elf on the roof dropping an iPad from rest (down is negative & ground is zero)

5th day of physics...
A physics elf driving in remote control car moving forward at constant speed and suddenly throwing it in then throwing it backward and reaching constant speed.

6th Day of Physics
A plate of stale physics cookies that have been thrown in the air and the crash on the ground... Be mindful of your starting and ending positions...

7th Day of Physics
An elf on a pogo stick....

8th Day of Physics...
An elf playing with a yo-yo, graph the yo-yo not the elf!,,


9th day of Physics...
A physics elf skydiving from a hot air balloon then pulling his parachute and safely returning to the ground.

10th day of physics...
A day off!

11th Day of physics...
A basketball released from the bottom of mainlands pool.
Be sure to label the top and bottom of the pool.

  1. So basically, we just have to draw the graph related to each situation and analyze it by describing the velocity, position and acceleration?

    1. yeah we just draw out the graphs and number them, and then we describe the slope like we did in class: positive, negative, zero, constant, ect.

    1. There's going to be a total of 12 graphs that we have to create. Follow the link he posted up there to print two sheets of the graph paper, and that's what you would use for each scenario.

  4. If a graph looks like a square root function graph but goes in the negative direction can it be labeled as a negative squirtic graph? It still starts at 0 but goes into the 4th quadrant

    1. It would be negative squirtic because it is going to the 4th quadrant and since the 4th quadrant is below the x-axis, it is negative.

    2. Is the elf on the pogo stick doing anything other than bouncing straight up and down? And is the one with the yo-yo doing any special tricks, or just up and down as well?

    3. I think he wants us to make the assumption on those two that the elf is going up and down at a constant rate and dropping the yo-yo up and down at a constant rate.

    1. Think about it: is the elf's position changing as time time passes if it's JUST sitting in the tree.

    1. We're assuming it's skating at a constant rate from the starting point, so yeah, it's basically skating in a straight line from the starting point.

    2. I saw a few different posts for this event. The elf would be skating in a straight line, but it could change speed. I had the elf start with a position of zero and increase its slop (accelerate) as time went on. Just wanted to see what you guys thought of that.

    1. there is no motion of the elf dropping the ipad, besides letting go. The ipad is the main part of the diagram. It sounds more realistic that something is dropping it.

  12. For the 6th day of Phsyics, are we just drawing one line? Or do you want us to draw a bunch of lines showing ALL of the cookies?

    1. I never thought of it that way. I would assume that it would be just one line since he didn't specify how many cookies were on the plate, and they would end up being similar lines anyway.

  13. I'm not really understanding the 9th graph can someone help me..is he going in a negative direction from 0? or.....is the hot air balloon at some higher point? if so what point

    1. It would be going in the negative direction, just not starting from zero. You would have to assume that zero would be the ground. When the elf jumps from the hot air balloon, it's at a higher point and I just chose a reasonable position for it.

    2. Nobody make the same mistake as me, we are not drawing the scenario on the graph paper (I drew an elf ice skating) we are graphing the motion of the scenario.

  14. Day 5 really makes no sense to me at all, did anybody interpret it differently than me?

    1. That one confused me too. At first I thought there was a typo, but I think what it is saying is that the elf is steadily going forward, and then all of a sudden goes steadily backwards. I got a rounded corner shape on my graph. I'm not 100% sure that my interpretation is right, but I hope this helps.

    3. i though when it said that he suddenly "threw it in" it meant that he changed direction very rapidly causing it to have all of a sudden a sharp corner. Then it evened out again

    4. He also said that it threw it backward, and that's what ended up confusing me. I thought that maybe it was a typo and he meant to say "he threw it in reverse" which caused the car to suddenly slow to a stop and go backwards in the negative direction at a constant speed.

    5. I think it just mean the car is in drive(so it is moving forward) then the elf puts the car in reverse and drives backwards, where he was just driving forward if that makes sense.

  16. what are the x and y axis labels? Are they (position and time) or (position and something else)?

    1. I made the x axis time for all of them, and the y axis was position, but sometimes I changed the Y axis from being horizontal position to vertical position (height).

  17. Also would the elf ice skating be at zero? because he's on the ground?

    1. You would be graphing the motion of the elf in this case, not the actual elf. The elf is moving at a constant rate on ice which has no friction, so your graph should be linear.

    2. Nazia, when you ice skate you aren't going the same speed the whole time. First you start off slower until you get to a constant speed.. So wouldn't the graph be curved?

    3. I made the assumption that the elf was going at a constant rate, but I see your point that it gradually goes faster. Like Mr. Crane says, there's no right answers in science. We have to prove it with our observations, so both of us could be right.

    4. You are completely right. Just like the cookie one, it's up to how you see it. I guess a lot of these graphs will vary depending on how you look at them.

  18. How would i describe a graph like day 9? because its not really linear and has 3 different slopes at least mine does anyway? Would i just write m= not constant, +/- ?

    Also do we need an equation like we did in class?

    1. I did it like we did in class that one day. Split up the lines like A to B, B to C, ect, so it's easier to look at

    3. You have to make a generalization, so basing your graph off of the common use of a yo-yo would be a good thing, so going simply up and down would most likely be fine, that is what I did.

  31. "throwing it in" means to change to a faster velocity and "throwing it backward" means to change to a velocity in the other direction right?

    1. thats what i assumed so i got a sharp incline then it went down sharply too.

    2. I just interpreted it as the car was moving forward, and the elf then put the car in reverse suddenly and went backwards, or in reverse.

  32. Should I have a scale in my graphs?

    1. yes you should always have a scale so whoever else is looking at it knows what each mark on the graph goes by. It also helps with organization so each graph has constant intervals.

    1. It's more like understanding all the concepts in each lab. He also posted the Midterm Review for us, which would be really good to look through and review.
