- This Equation is will allow you to solve #5 quickly WITH OUT USING THE QUADRATIC FORMULA OR GUESS AND CHECK.
And this new equation gives us 4 new equations if we switch the variables around. :D
ReplyDeleteI haven't even looked at the pencast yet, but it's so great how we can derive 4 more equations from it!
DeleteThis equation helps because we don't always know the exact time, and this equation helps us solve for Velocity, Acceleration, and Position without having to find the time first using an entirely different equation.
ReplyDeleteCould this work on the other equations as well?
ReplyDeletei probably can because we can get other equations from this one by moving around the variables and such.
Deleteyeah
Deleteyou can substitute to get an equation w/out time (or whatever other variable) for the other equations too.
If you solve and figure it out, you should be able to find more equations.
DeleteIf you move the variables around in this equation to get a variable that you are trying to find in another equation by itself, you should be able to replace that variable in your equation with whatever is on the other side of the equals sign in this equation. So hypothetically, if you have the formula x=y+z/2 and you have another problem, 12+y=n, and you know what x and z are, all you have to do is convert the formula to y=x-z/2, plug in x and z, then input that solution for y in 12+y=n, then you have your n value(s). These aren't the real formulas, just an example
DeleteCan i write this on a seperate piece of paper then put it in my notebook because i left my notebook in school.
ReplyDeletei think you can just copy it into your notebook during lunch or something. As long as it is in your notebook, it doesnt matter how it gets there.
DeleteYou could do this, but it would be best to copy down your notes into your notebook, because from what I hear, he checks the notebooks at the end of the year to see if we have all of the labs and notes.
DeleteI have run out of room in my notebook. Should I just get a new notebook or should I find a way to have the entire year's worth of notes in one notebook?
Deletewait im confused. in the beginning of the video it said change in t= change in v/a
ReplyDeletewouldn't time still be a part of this equation then? because youd have to know that 1/2 a (delta v(2)/a + vnought * (delta v/a) / P(nought). or is this because now it doesn't involve time but an equation that equaled time?
He substituted change in V/a for time(as they are equal), and then simplified it. This gives us this new equation which doesn't use time.
Delete*time for Change in V/a
DeleteAt the end of the video he says that this equation is in free fall. Does this mean that the equation is only available in free fall?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think that when it says free fall, the starting velocity cannot be zero, and it is in motion by the force of gravity.
DeleteSo does that mean we could only use the equation in problems like the one on the recent quiz?
DeleteThat comment was Skylar young
DeleteYes, this is only for a falling object.
DeleteThis equation definitely opens up more information a lot easier. Glad we were able to derive this "short cut".
ReplyDeleteAgreed, though I still don't understand how one can find velocity when there is no time involved. Does the knowledge of acceleration make up for it?
Delete-Hope Greenspun
Time is in accleration because accelertion is v over t squared
DeleteHey Mr. Crane this opens up a whole new way to solving the equations without having to spend too much time on them... Also, I really liked the pencast idea, it was nice that it went along with your speed on writing, making it easier to understand.
ReplyDelete-Jake Naumann
I like having this equation. It makes a lot of other questions and problems easier to solve. This pencast was a great idea, too. I liked being able to not only hear it but see it as you were talking about it.
ReplyDelete~Gianna Briglia
I agree. I understood how we got from one equation to the other easier.
Delete-Skylar Young
When it says fill in the rest of the chart, what are we supposed to put for the lab part in the back of our notes?
ReplyDeleteI think you could simply call it "S1." That's the label we were supposed to use for the pencast.
DeleteIt is "Gravity Falls" and "Que es Velocidad". We went over it last class
DeleteYes grace fill in the equation chart in the back of your notebook by the time we have class in order to get full credit for the assignment
ReplyDeleteThis Equation is wasy to use. It is one of the best to use.
ReplyDeleteIt is longer than the others so it is probably best to only use it when time is one of your unknowns
DeleteDoes this equation go in the back of our notebook in the chart?
ReplyDeleteyea
DeleteYes, it should go along with all the other formulas we have learned.
DeleteYes. Put it in the chart, as well as the variables and the lab (S1)
DeleteWe only have to put in one variation of this equation right? We don't have to "reword" it to get each variable by itself?
DeleteOf course not! Unless you're one of those students that needs to memorize every individual equation, then go right ahead. Otherwise, as long as you know how to take this equation and solve for the other variables, you should be fine.
DeleteHarrison, I believe the labs he said were "Gravity Falls" and "Que es Velocidad" not S1.
DeleteAre we going to go over this equation in class because i am a little confused about how this equation is used.
ReplyDelete-Skylar Young
Most likely we will. However if we don't, Mr. Crane is always glad to help at any time he is available.
DeleteYeah I guess that if it IS only used for free fall, then it could have helped us in problems like the P.U.K.E. quiz we just had
ReplyDeleteThat was an answer for your first question Skylar
DeleteI believe that if as long as you have all the values for the variables, then you can use the equation.
DeleteReally cool website, as if you are personally teaching us. Also, great equation, really helpful in solving many things. However, will we be able to go over this in class? I am a little confused.
ReplyDeleteI am also a little bit confused. The voice and writing was hard to interpret at times.
DeleteWhen he gets back, he'll most likely go more in depth with the meaning of the equation and how he derived it.
DeleteDo we leave the equation as Vf^2? Why wouldn't you finish it to leave it as Vf=square root of the rest of the equation ?
ReplyDeleteI do believe both would equal the same thing in the long run, it is just that Vf^2 is easier to type/write.
DeleteBut wouldn't it be slightly more convenient to only have to find the Vf? I know it barely takes any additional time, I am just curious as to why it was left at that in the Pencast
DeleteYou're right Noah, the equation could be further simplified. I think he left it as VF^2 because it's easier to plug and chug into your calculator that way, but having it equal the square root of the rest of the equation probably gives you the same answer. I guess it comes down to which one works best for you.
DeleteThe pencast helped a lot. It was nice being able to follow along as you were talking and writing it made it seem like we were actually in class learning this lesson. Having this equation it really helps me get an answer quicker then doing multiple steps
ReplyDeleteYes, when teachers are left with no choice but to not go to school, this is a very useful tool that they all should utilize
DeleteI could use the free homework Mr. Crane. When you see us next is going to be before the end of the marking period right?
ReplyDeleteI apologize if this is too off-topic, but why don't you put ads on your blog Mr. Crane? We are smart enough not to click on them and it is an easy way to make some money because of all the traffic you get from your students.
ReplyDeleteOh, Noah. Haha I don't think he can get ads on the blog because blogspot originally has no ads, but I do see where you're going with that.
DeleteThats a great idea Noah. All of his students should get a share of it haha!
DeleteSurely he could, he would just have to set up a Google Ads account, the only thing might be if the school would allow it. I know this is an out of school website, but if the administration figures out that he is making money off of the students, then it might put his job in risk.
Deletewhat does he mean by complete the chart?
ReplyDeleteAt the end of your notebook, there is the equations table. Add this new equation to the table.
Deletethats a cool pen how does it work? neat equation but why mr crane? why, we have all of the technology in the world to calcualte everything we will ever need to know what is the purpose? and you sounded a little lost with out me bantering you with questions haha Toto.
ReplyDeleteDo you really want to lose another 80 dollars? We made this pretty clear last time you questioned Mr. Crane's teaching methods that he knows what he's doing. If you want to do it your own way physics genius, then go ahead and do it.
Delete-Guess who
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_burn_centers_in_the_United_States
DeleteYou have a pen and it records your voice and there is special paper that you write on for the notes to be transfered to the pencast website thingy
DeleteIm guessing that Guess who is Kevin. Am I right?
ReplyDeleteMr. Crane in class today you said there would be something about a squirrell on the blog, but it appears to me that there is not. Is there something I am missing or didnt see?
ReplyDeleteJimmy its not just you, I dont see it either.
DeleteThanks guys won't be able to post. So discuss tomorrow. My baby is coming home today.
DeleteAnd Toto, technology is great and all, but if the next generation (us) does not understand the mechanics of physics, we won't be able to continue to create the technology you talked about. What if the program glitches, or breaks? Only people who understand the process can fix it. Its better to be safe than sorry.
ReplyDeleteJust wondering, the equation that this blog is about doesn't solve for time, right?
ReplyDeleteNo it doesnt because it no longer involved time. If we need to find time with can use basically every other equation because they involve time. But the one that we learned that we specifically figured out of time was the t=squareroot (2* change in P)/a.
DeleteNo, like Mimi said, but there also is time in accleration and accleration is in the new formula.
DeleteIt is something to be used in the absence of time
DeleteIf you take this formula you can form a time forumla form it. The equation is t=
ReplyDeleteSorry my computer will not let me right the rest but John if I see you in the hall way I will let you know what it is.
DeleteSo the main change to get this formula was changing the time to v/a and then you just solved the rest of it. So now we should be able to do this with other equations in the absence of knowns that we need right? All we have to do is break down what each variable is comprised of
ReplyDeleteYes, that was the only change to this equation. And I suppose that you could do this same process for any equation.
