Several Questions:
Do not look up the answer it is useless in this exercise.
Write down your observations of the characteristics of fruits and vegetables use that to define them and determine the difference!

You should make a things that chart to answer your questions.

What is the difference between a fruit and a vegetable?  So what is a Banana?

What is a duck billed platypus?

    2. I found it on the calendar and it was color coated the same color as our other two assignments on the calender so i wasn't sure. But thanks for clarifying.

  5. A fruit has some characteristics that differ from a vegetable. Vegetables are similar to plants. They need the same tentative care to survive. Vegetables like broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, and lettuce have leaves. But instead of having those leaves, fruits like peaches, apples, and grapes have seeds or pits. So I would classify a banana as a fruit.
A duck billed platypus has all of the same traits or characteristics as a normal platypus. The only part that makes this one unique is that the qualities of the platypus' beak is the same as a duck.
A virus is in fact a living thing. To live means to be actively functioning, and a virus is active in your body and makes your insides sick a shuts them down.

  6. Hey Mr. Crane its Mike Dalessio. Is the questions on the blog dealing with the vegetables, viruses, and the platypus our homework?

  7. Fruits and vegetables are two totally opposite food items. Vegetables are classified as roots, stems, or leaves, so anything other then them can not be classified as vegetables. You do not see apples or bananas growing from roots in the ground, and they surely don't have any leaves attached to them.Fruits have seeds, and although some vegetables have seeds, they do not fit into the other categories. So bananas are most definitely a fruit. A duck billed platypus is no different then a regular platypus. It has the same exact look to it, same characteristics, and same daily routines, but the only difference between the two is that the duck billed platypus has a beck that resembles a ducks. A virus is indeed a living organisms because in order for it to survive it must feed on cells and other organs to grow. It eats away at something if not treated, and it is very active as it shuts down a bodies ways to defend itself.

  8. Fruits and vegetables are similar in that they both originate from a part of a plant (orange tree, tomato plant, cucumber plant). But they have many differences. For example, most fruits have seeds, but there are a few exceptions. A banana does not have seeds, but it is still a fruit because it is not a leaf or stem. If it was, it would be classified as a vegetable. Anything that is not a leaf, stem, or root is not a vegetable. A duck billed platypus is a platypus with a beak that resembles that of a duck. A regular platypus and a duck-billed platypus share everything in common except for the beak. That is their only difference. A virus is a living thing because it is a form of bacteria. All bacteria have one or more cells, and anything with cells is a living thing.

  9. It is mostly known that a fruit has seeds. However, some vegetables (like the cucumber) have seeds as well. Also, not all things classified as fruits have seeds, like the banana. It is also said that vegetables are green. However, carrots are vegetables, yet they are orange. I would say that the main difference between the two is the fact that fruits grow on trees and vegetables come from a stem or bush (with some exceptions). Therefore, a banana is a fruit because it grows from a tree.

To the best of my knowledge-- a duck billed platypus is the same thing as a regular platypus, minus the one characteristic of the beak. The duck billed platypus's beak resembles a duck's beak, hence the name.

I will have to agree with my classmates in the idea that a virus is a living thing. As mentioned above it is bacteria, and bacteria is living. Also, it has to eat and transfer oxygen. Therefore, a virus is indeed living.

  11. Considering that all fruits and vegetables originate from some kind of plant, they are going to have some similar characteristics, but will also have many different ones. For example, a fruit is produced from the flower of a plant, while a vegetable comes from the other parts such as the stem or roots. Since fruits are the flowers of the plant which is the part that disconnects and reproduces, they will all most likely have seeds somewhere on them. Therefore, a banana is a fruit since it is the fruit of the tree and has seeds inside it.

As far as I know, a duck billed platypus is just like any other platypus, which are mammals, since they are warm-blooded even though they lay eggs.

I would have to agree that a virus is a living thing since it is a bacteria, as said above. Even though it might only be a single-celled organism, it is still, in fact, alive.

  12. A vegetable usually comes from something and has leaves or stems. A fruit has to have seeds or a pit to be a fruit. Even with these guidelines, there is a lot of debate between some produce about whether they are fruits, vegetables, or sometimes even something else entirely. This is the case with a banana.

A duck-billed platypus has all of the characteristics of a regular platypus, except for its beak. Instead of a regular platypus beak, it would have the beak of a duck.

I do not consider viruses living. The only way they survive is by taking resources from things that are actually living. They do not reproduce in a way that would lead to classification as a living thing.

  13. Fruits and veggies are similar because they both come from plants. But the main difference between the two is that while a veggie grows on roots and stems, fruits usually come from a "flower" like part of the plant. Also, most fruits have seeds within them. Although bananas do not have seeds, they are still technically considered fruits because they share more traits in the fruit category than the veggie one.

I believe a duck-billed platypus is a specie of platypus with a duck beak.

In my opinion, viruses are not living because they do not fully fit the criteria of a living thing. One of the things it cant do is reproduce on its own.

  15. Fruits and Vegetables are different yet the same. Vegetables grow from a stem or root and fruits usually come above ground on a plant. Also, some fruits have citric acid making it a citrus fruit. Most fruits have seeds although some vegetables have seeds. Bananas don't have seeds. But they share more common characteristics with fruits then they would with vegetables. Therefore, a banana is a fruit.

A duck billed platypus in my opinion is a mammal that has a bill similar to one that a duck has.

A virus is not a living thing because in order to be a living thing you need to be able to reproduce on your own. A virus is unable to reproduce without cells. So, a virus isn't a living thing.

  16. While fruits and vegetables are both healthy, edible foods, fruits and vegetables have signifigant differences. For the most part, vegetables are grown from a living thing having stems, leaves, or something similiar. In contrast, fruits must have seeds or a pit (ones with pits, such as avocados, are called stonefruits). Certain foods are still controversial in terms of which group they fall under, however.

Although I know little to no information on duck-billed platypus, I know they are mammals with a duck-like beak. I think they are also the only mammals to lay eggs, similiar to how bats are the only mammals that can fly.

A virus is not a living thing. Although it moves and is capable of causing harm on both small and large scales, a virus doesn't take in resources and doesn't reproduce.

  17. A vegetable comes from the root of a plant, a stem, or leaves.
On the other hand, a fruit does not grow from the ground, but it has seeds or pits instead. Bananas don't come from a stem, root, or leaf for it comes from a banana plant. Therefore, a banana is a fruit.

A duck billed platypus is pretty much the same as the ordinary platypus. It has the same characteristics and live the same way. The only difference is that a duck billed platypus has a beak that looks like a duck's bill.

A virus is not a living thing because it does not fit into the criteria of a living thing.

  18. Fruits grow off of plants, while a vegetable is the plant. Banana is a fruit.

Platypus technically is a mammal. Bearing live young is not a necessary characteristic of mammals, going against elementary school teaching.

Viruses move and need nutrients to live, therefore they are alive.

  22. The difference between a fruit and a vegetable is that first of all, the majority of fruits contain seeds, while the majority of vegetables do not. That does not mean something needs seeds to be a fruit and needs to lack seeds to be a vegetable, it is simply a judgment of majority. Secondly, fruits mainly grow on trees and vines, while vegetables are from roots or they are the actual plant. Bananas may not have seeds but they grow on a banana plant and are therefore a fruit.

A duck billed platypus is exactly what it sounds like. It is no different from an ordinary platypus except for the fact that the duck billed platypus has a bill which resembles that of a duck's.

Viruses are most certainly living because they are a type of bacteria and bacteria need to eat and breath just like all other living organisms.

  24. A fruit and vegetable have distinguishing characteristics in which we can classify different foods. A fruit is usually grown above ground and has a plethora of seeds inside and sometimes outside of the fruit. Also, fruits are usually sweet tasting. A vegetable is usually grown under ground, just like a root. These vegetables usually aren't sweet like fruit. A banana has characteristics of a fruit; it grows above ground. However, it doesn't have any visible seeds. Therefore, we really can't determine whether or not a banana is a fruit or a vegetable because there are key characteristics missing.

A duck billed platypus is a specific type of platypus with its own special and definitive characteristics. It is just like any other platypus, but has a mouth that resembles a duck's bill. Also, platypuses are one of the only mammals that can lay eggs.

Viruses are not living things because they are like a disease. A virus can be spread like an epidemic, but it does not need to be living to hurt someone. They have something that is harmful to humans in the virus, but it does not have the qualities of a living creature. Think of it like a computer virus, these are non living programs that can harm your computer.

  25. Vegetables are parts of the plant used for the benefits of that plant, such as roots, stems or leaves. Fruits can not be these things. Fruits are often used for reproduction, which is why they usually have seeds. Because bananas are not the roots, stems, or leaves of their plants, they are fruits.

A duck billed platypus is a mammal just like any other platypus. Having a duck bill is not a characteristic of birds, so the duck billed platypus is a mammal.

A virus is not a living thing. It does not reproduce or take in nutrients like all other organisms.
