  1. The key ideas behind Richie's Potty Chart is the fact that one must look at the information, then make assumptions on why each day is as it is. According to Occam's Razor, the explanation with the least amount of assumptions is the best explanation. It is impossible not to make assumptions on Richie's Potty Chart as to why each day has the amount of stars it has. The biggest limitation to this investigation is not knowing anything about the things that happen behind the chart. We do not know who Richie is, how old Richie is, and if Richie is even a human.

  2. The key ideas around Ritchie's potty chart is to realize that you can't perform scientific experiment with the lack in explanation of what we are seeing in Richies potty chart.

The biggest scientific limitation is, again, the fact that we have no explnation of who is Richie, and what this potty chart truly represents. This then forces us to make lots of assumptions in order to realize a perfect explanation, which goes against, "Occam's Razor".

  3. To go along with the above posts, science and physics aren't based on assumptions and guesses, but on confirmed true facts. Without the background of what Richie's Potty chart even is, it makes it pretty difficult to try to explain what it represents or to figure anything else out about it.

    1. Actually, guesswork is a pretty important part of physics. Every fact that we know today started off as a guess. People then proved it to be true, and we assume it as fact.
It doesn't matter if your guess is wrong; as long as you can figure out why it is incorrect, you have learned something and can then make an even more educated guess. Eventually, your guesses will become more and more accurate until they are proven as fact.

  4. Richie's Potty Chart and Occam's Razor have many things in common. The more assumptions you made the more in depth you had to go. Physics is not about making assumptions, it is about being exact. Occam's Razor states that the simpler the better; which came out to be true. We came up with how often Richie was home. This eliminated all the assumptions, stories, and guesses. The biggest limitation to Richie's Potty Chart is no background info. We don't know anything about the chart and who or what it is about. This also relates to physics. Many times people don't know anything about something so the best way is Occam's Razor.

The key idea behind Richies Potty Chart is to look beyond what you can physically see and how it relates to science. Because we kept making assumptions we applied the concept of Occams Razor to see what would most likely be correct. So, it's eliminating eating Taco Bell on Sunday night at 11:45 pm! The limitation of this though is we we not told and didn't know too much about Richie, the chart, or the time period. Even Richies health so all we could use scientifically was Occams Razor!

  7. Richie's Potty Chart related to physics because your OBSERVING! It's basically things that all over again. We made assumptions and then we applied it to science! Occams Razor states that when two assumptions are similar the simpler one is better. Even though we knew basically nothing about Richie and what it could be we still could make assumptions and guesses on what the chart was based off of.

  8. As in physics and science, Richie's Potty Chart presents objective information that can be analyzed. Knowing nothing about the subject, one has to raise questions and make assumptions about the chart based on observations. The biggest scientific limitation of Richie's Potty Chart is that these questions and assumptions cannot be experimentally tested, at least not reliably.

    1. Without a doubt, you really hit the nail on the head with this post, partner! The principal ideas to be taken away from "Richie's Potty Chart" include the scientific processes of assuming, inferring, and/or hypothesizing. Along the lines of what you made evident, it was certainly necessary to make particularly 'reasonable' assumptions and/or inferences about the chart, which would help to bring about an actual hypothesis, based on our observations, as well. This all relates to science/physics, as these are basic procedural methods/necessities, when conducting an experiment(s). At the end of the day, however, the predominant scientific limitation with this investigation, as Trevis so eloquently noted above, was merely the fact that our hypotheses were not testable, as we could not go back in time to test/experiment.

  9. The key ideas between Richie's Potty Chart is finding the simplest theory. There were many idea's and thoughts for Richie's Potty Chart and we have to test all different theories to find it. In this we had to make mistakes to figure out we should try something different, just like in Science. The problem with this is that there are so many theories for this activity.

  10. The most important idea on this chart is finding out how it's used. In class, we thought of multiple theories on how it was used. In order to come up with those ideas, we had to think outside of the box and all of the possibilities. We do the same thing for science ! We come up with different theories and choose the most logical one.

  11. The most important thing a student should get out of this lesson is the way to make observations. This is pretty much the idea behind Richard's Potty Chart. Students should understand and be able to give objective information when making as many observations as they can. Not just because relating to the Scientific Method, but "Things That" and Richard's Potty Chart related to Science in multiple ways. We learned how important observations are and how analyzing carefully is essential for each object. We understand the difference between subjunctive and objective and how everyone perceives things differently, and how we have to be careful.
Unfortunately with Richard's Potty Chart, we are left hanging with multiple questions. Students are not being given enough information to make clear statements, but instead are left to give their best assumptions on the situation. This leaves a lot of confusion and a few different stories instead of one specific clear one.

  12. Richie's Potty Chart relates to science because it is all about creating a hypothesis, and discussing ways to find out exactly what he was doing each day of the week. The key ideas are to work as a group to figure out the easiest theory. As a group, we had to test all of our theories, and had to work together to find them. The problem is that there are so many people with many different ideas and theories about what he was doing all of the days.

  13. The most important idea on the chart is beeing able to make observations and hypothesis off of observations and other wrong hypothesis. Another thing that this chart shows is that it is hard to figure stuff out without knowing all that is needed. The issue with this was we can never figure out what theory is a correct one

  14. The key idea behind Richie's Potty Chart is not just making observations; it's
involving ALL parts of the Scientific Method. Everything related to
science/physics is based off of that. It begins with an observation
(Richie's chart), but it's followed by a question(s) (who is Richie?), and a hypothesis (Richie is a child). The biggest limitation to this investigation is that we never will be able to complete the Scientific Method, because it is impossible to test our hypothesis. We can't go back in time to prove our hypothesis to be correct; so all we do is make assumptions

  15. The key idea behind Richies Potty Chart is Occams Razor. This states that the simplest answer is usually the most correct. Since we were not given that much information, we had to ask questions about the chart. Such as why did the maximum and minimum occur? Some people were making very complicated inferences about what happened like he ate tacos on Monday. A much better answer would be that he was home all day on Monday.

  16. To pretty much agree with what has been previously stated, assumption are necessary in science. We learn new information buy assuming it first and proving it later. In Richie's Potty Chart, we are given no background information about the chart, and so we are forced to assume things like, what do the stars represent, who even is Richie, is he even human? By assuming these things, we can determine them later once we have enough information to prove them. The only problem with such assumptions is that there are an infinite amount. Therefore, it would be very difficult to determine which assumption is correct, but alas, at least it's a place to start.

  17. The key ideas behind Richie's Potty Chart are observations, hypotheses, and testing. Richie's potty chart is a perfect example of how physics works. The chart displays many different results, but, by making observations on each result, each student came up with a different hypothesis. Then, using that hypothesis, they applied it to the chart in testing to see if they were right. Now whether or not anyone actually cracked the story of Richie's potty chart is a different story, but the fact that we came up with an applicable answer helps us define physics. In physics, we'll never know if we are right, but we can always test to see if we are wrong. Physics is all about making educated assumptions that apply in various situations. Additionally, the biggest scientific limitation of this investigation is the fact that there is not one answer. There could be multiple hypotheses that work; therefore, it is very hard to come down to a conclusive answer.

  18. The key ideas of Richie's Potty Chart were using the information given, being able to make observations, and making some sort of a conclusion (the simpler, the better according to Occam's Razor). It related to physics and science, because those are some of the main steps used when conducting scientific experiments. The biggest scientific limitation was the lack of information. There would have to be a number of assumptions, which can throw off the hypothesis. With more information, a better hypothesis could be made, which would lead to a better conclusion.

  19. Like Jake B. said, i agree that Richie's Potty Chart applies to science because of observations. Also, i think assumptions is the main reason why Richie's
Potty chart applies to physics. Multiple assumptions are made such as, Who is Richie? What does a star stand for? Multiple assumptions are made like this all the time while reading and understanding Richie's Potty Chart.

  20. The key ideas behind Richie's potty chart is that we are able to put part of the scientific method to use. We collected data and observations from the chart and created hypotheses to explain why we collected those data and observations. The reason I say we only put "part of the scientific method" to use is because there is simply no way to test these hypotheses! That is the biggest scientific limitation of the investigation. Richie is long-gone and has moved on to bigger and better things than keeping track of his trips to the potty. There is no way to test our theories.

  21. The key ideas behind Richie's potty chart are analyzing the data, then making assumptions, and making observations based on those assumptions. All of these aspects tie into physics and science. Most times it is necessary to make assumptions. Also, once you make your final assumptions you never get to find out if your right. This occurs many times is science. There is no answer, you are forced to come up with your own. The biggest limitation about Richie's Potty chart was that there was no background information provided whatsoever and we had to look and what was evident and make assumptions based on that.

  22. The key ideas of Richie's Potty Chart are making observations and based on those observations creating a hypothesis that would explain the maximum, minimum, qualities, and inequalities. Obviously, observations and hypotheses are related to physics and science. Science and physics in nutshell is making observations and hypothesizing. There are several limitations in this investigation. For example, we don't know how long the chart is spanned out for and we don't know the exact use of the chart. But the biggest limitation is probably the fact that nothing can be tested, so a conclusion can't really be made.

  23. Richie's Potty Chart taught us that when making observations-- the simpler the better (occams razor). The hardest part of this is to make it so that people have little or no questions. You have to make it pretty straight forward so that anyone could understand it. We always want to be creative but we have to limit ourselves because that way no questions need to be asked for further detail. Another reason Richie's Potty chart was difficult was because we couldn't perform any experiments. We don't know who Richie is so we can't follow him around and see why all of the stars were placed the way they were. We could only assume the reasons, for example, for why he had 6 stars on Wednesday and 0 on Saturday. We had limitations.

  24. Richie's Potty chart is like a generic chart that can help you understand data that is collected in science. It helps organize and create questions that you can use for different charts and data. Also, it shows that making observations and creating assumptions/hypothesis are essential to come up with. A big limitation for this investigation, is that we can't test our hypotheses because we can only base them on assumptions. Assumptions aren't definite and can be unreliable.

  25. The key ideas behind Richie's Potty Chart is making a plethora of observations that lead to accurate assumptions. The chart is a sufficient way of collecting and organizing data. A big scientific limitation in this lab, is that we can not know for sure that our hypothesis is correct. We couldn't preform any experiments, we could only make assumptions. Assumptions aren't a reliable source in any situation, because their isn't a promise that they are correct.

  26. The key idea like most people said is to make broad assumptions and use it to explain why the data is how it is. Like in class when we said he was at Taco Bell at 11:45 that was way to specific of an assumption so we said that he just wasn't home because we didn't have to know where he was, just not home.

  27. Assumptions and error are parts of every physics experiment that you do. You must make mistakes and learn from them. Richie's potty chart teaches us how to use our reasoning skills to come up with logical explanations. While everyone may have a different idea of what the potty chart represents, as long as they can back it up. We may never know what Rickie's potty chart really is but we can make our best guesses.

  28. The key idea for Richie's potty chart is the observations and hypothesis. We had to observe what was going on to which days they were happening on and make assumptions which would correspond with the chart. It relates to physics because for this, we made observations and hypothesis and came up with many different conclusions, likewise in physics, we can come up with many different solutions and be correct.

  29. The key idea in riches potty chart is that we had to make assumptions like most people said. This relates to physics because we have to make assumptions to answer a question about the data. In riches potty chart we had to make assumptions on who Richie is, what the stars mean and what the chart is used for. This is a problem because we can never be sure if we are right. We may think we know what the chart means, but we can never be sure because of assumptions.

  30. The key ideas behind Richie's Potty Chart are making observations and assumptions and forming a hypothesis based on the observations. Although you should not make assumptions while doing physics, it is almost impossible not to assume certain things when you look at Richie's Potty Chart. Everyone assumes that Richie is a young child being potty trained because of how it looks and its name. However, there are many possibilities to what it could be. The key idea is not to make assumptions and base your hypothesis off of facts and data.
The main limitation of this investigation is that we don't really know for sure what Richie's Potty Chart is, and there is no way for us to find out. This forces us to make assumptions.

  31. Making good observations and reasonable assumptions is the main idea behind Richard’s Potty Chart. Objective information and not subjective information should be drawn from this chart, and we, as students, should understand the difference between the two. However, because there isn't enough information and we have to make assumptions from Richard’s Potty Chart, we cannot be certain that there is a single specific answer. Therefore, having multiple answers is the biggest scientific limitation. Using this chart, students learn how to understand that science is never clearly cut because there can be more than one explanation. Furthermore, we can put to use the Scientific Method. Although we gathered observations and established a hypothesis explaining our given information, there is no way we can test our hypothesis. This is another big scientific limitation.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Richie's Potty Chart displays the scientific concepts of hypothesis, observation, and reasonable inference. Just like in physics, there is not a single specific answer, and as students, we are able to act as physicists, and make clear-cut inferences that are justified by concrete evidence off of the chart. Also, because of a lack of information consistent with the chart's use (ie. the time charted... "was it one week, or kept over multiple weeks"), assumptions made from different groups of observers led to different results. Thus, Richie's Potty Chart, relative to much of the study of Physics, does not lead to one correct answer, but rather must be continually reviewed based on the information given (Richie could gain another star). Furthermore, the greatest scientific limitation of this investigation was the inability to test/experiment our findings on the chart. This makes it difficult to support our hypothesis with concrete evidence that will convince others to support your hypothesis as well. We may never know if our analysis of Richie's Potty Chart was correct!

  33. Richie's Potty Chart forces us to make reasonable assumptions and then record our observations based off of these assumptions. We were not given all the information about what the potty chart actually represented so we were forced to just start making guesses and hope that it would lead us in the right direction. Once we asked enough questions we were able to start being more specific with our questions and discover what Richie's Potty Chart could actually be a chart for. However, it also shows that just as it is in the scientific world, a definite answer about who Richie was or what the Potty Chart was for would be very difficult to determine without being told the answer or being given all the information. The lack of background knowledge we possessed (or more appropriately, didn't possess) about the chart was a bit of a limitation but not as much so as the fact that we cannot design an experiment to test our observations/hypotheses Since we are just looking at a chart and making observations from it we cannot make a test to figure out if our answers were correct. Thus, this limits our knowledge of the Potty Chart as a whole because we can only observe and not test. Without testing, it is nearly impossible to see if your hypothesis is right.

  34. The key idea behind Richies Potty Chart was for us to see that no matter how many different Solutions you come up with the simplest one is always the answer. No matter how, many times we came up with different stories as to why Richie "pottied" the max on mondays or some days not at all, the key thing about our stories was that they all were based onthe same explanation we just added different ideas to it

  35. Richie's potty chart has many things to do with physics. It relates to the Occam's Razor because the simpler the idea the better. You have to make observations and inferences, but not assumptions. It will you understand the chart better. The biggest limitation to Richie's potty chart is that you have no idea who Richie is and the duration of the chart.

  36. There are a few ideas behind Richie's potty chart. Observation, making a hypothesis, and testing the hypothesis were some of the key concepts that were discussed in class. We were asked to draw five questions from our observations of the chart, and that led to discussions of possible scenarios. Because the chart really did not have any labels, we could only make assumptions. Out of these said assumptions however, came a hypothesis. We made an educated guess as to what the potty chart could have possibly been an illustration of. Now all that is left to be done is to test our hypothesis to see whether or not it's plausible. Of course there is an obvious limitation to the experiment. We have no information for the chart, other than the title, stars, and day labels. We have no idea what the potty chart could possibly signify, which is why we have to test any assumptions. Although we are left without some much needed information, our good insight is certainly a helping hand in completing the experiment.

  37. The key idea behind Richie's potty chart is, we have to make assumptions based on what we see and only what we see. We must try and decide why each star is placed where it is within limitation. The goal is to make an assumption and make it as clear and straightforward as possible. The less questions that are branching off from the original assumption the better. The biggest limitation we had to overcome was Richie's age, and how old he was.

  38. The key idea behind Richie's Potty Chart is the fact that we must make several assumptions. We must also create a hypothesis based on the information given and the assumptions we made. We do not even know if he is human.

  39. There are many key ideas behind Richard's Potty Chart. First, we had to make a lot of assumptions due to the lack of information, and our hypothesis would have to be based off the assumptions we made. We would have to ask a lot of questions and try to answer them ourselves. The biggest scientific limitation is the lack of information and the amount of assumptions we would have to make as a result.

  40. The key idea of Richie's Potty Chart is that we must be able to hypothesize, and make assumptions even though there's more than meets the eye with them, and with any assumption based on the materials and data given, there must be an experiment to prove the validity of it. In science and physics, a hypothesis must be provable and testable, and not strictly observable based on assumptions that may or may not align with evidences needed to form a conclusion. The limitation was not being given the factual evidences, therefore, having to propose details, and inferences all on our own, and we were left with unverifiable grey areas that cannot be proven right or wrong.
